What Difference Does Kindness Make?

I remember when I was a youth, I had a season of rebellion against the Lord. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I wrongly blamed God for my problems and felt abandoned by Him, so I attempted to live my life on my own terms, which only led me further into darkness.

Then the Lord sent me a godly group of true friends at just the right time, who showed me kindness and in doing so, shined the love and light of Jesus Christ into my life.

When I saw agape love flowing through average kids just like me, it rekindled a hunger in me to return to the Lord who loves me completely. Such is the power of kindness.

Kindness Meets Real Needs

In Acts 28:2, after Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta, Luke writes, “And the natives showed us unusual kindness; for they kindled a fire and made us all welcome, because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold.”

God used the kindness of the inhabitants of Malta to bless Paul and to meet his needs, but whether they realized it or not, it was really God showing His love and provision for Paul through them.

The greatest thing a man can do for his Heavenly Father is to be kind to some of His other children.

In the same way, we are to be conduits for God’s love to the people around us. Why? Because as Second Corinthians 5:14 states, “For the love of Christ compels us.”

Kindness Introduces People to Jesus

Jesus poured out His mercy and grace upon us, and love is the supernatural byproduct. First John 4:11 says, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

Jesus set the ultimate example of demonstrating for us what it means to show kindness. Jesus said it clearly in John 15:12 for all of us to follow, “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” And how exactly does He love us? Verse 13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” That’s how.

I am a living testimony of the power of the love of Jesus Christ manifested through one person to another.

Our love to God is measured by our everyday fellowship with others and the love it displays.
— Andrew Murray

The power of kindness demonstrating the love of Christ to another person is available to each one of us because the Holy Spirit dwells within us. As those who are loved by Christ and have received His grace and mercy, we have the privilege and responsibility of shining that love out to the world around us!

In doing so, we will have the profound joy of knowing that we are being used as instruments of God.
